The exam period is over, and the summer break has finally begun. Although many people expect to feel energetic again after just a few days of rest, reality is often different: the mental and physical strain accumulated by the end of the semester does not disappear overnight. What Happens in the Library When It’s Closed? And What Do Librarians Do?

The library’s summer quiet can be deceiving — there are no familiar lines at the circulation desk, no students in the reading rooms, and the building is closed, with readers unable to step among the familiar shelves. It might seem as if the institution itself has “gone on holiday” when the well-known CLOSED sign is put up. In reality, this is when an important phase of the library’s life begins — only behind the scenes. 

The nature of summer work varies between library departments, but in many places these months offer the opportunity to carry out tasks that receive less attention during the academic year. Below, we present some typical summer background activities of the public services staff.
